At Blue Cross Animal Hospital, we are dedicated to providing compassionate, high-quality veterinary care for every patient who walks through our doors. Our team believes that pets are family, and we are committed to treating each animal with the same level of care, respect, and attention we would give our own.
Our History
Blue Cross Animal Hospital has deep roots in the community, with the original hospital dating back to 1934. A piece of that history still lives on today—you can see a photo of the original hospital displayed on our wall, serving as a reminder of the legacy we continue to carry forward. The animal hospital has changed locations three times within a half mile radius.
Dr. Ester Rodriguez took over the practice in 1986 and was the sole veterinarian, providing dedicated care to generations of pets and their families. In June of 2011, the hospital entered a new chapter when her son, Dr. Sean Rodriguez, joined the practice alongside his classmate, Dr. Jonathan Friedberg. Both doctors graduated from Western University of Health Sciences in 2010. They practiced together with Dr. Ester Rodriguez for a period of time until Dr. Ester decided to leave Blue Cross Animal Hospital in 2013.
For many years following, Dr. Sean Rodriguez and Dr. Jonathan Friedberg led the hospital together, building on its long-standing reputation while continuing to grow and evolve the level of care offered. Throughout this time, Dr. Mikel Gonzales, also a classmate of Dr. Rodriguez and Dr. Frieberg, would often work alongside them offering relief work when needed.
Until early 2025 when Blue Cross Animal Hospital expanded its medical team, welcoming Dr. Mikel Gonzales full time, along with Dr. Lorena Sandoval, who graduated in 2020 from Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine. Their addition reflects our continued commitment to growth, collaboration, and providing comprehensive care to our patients.
Our Doctors

Dr. Sean Rodriguez – A graduate of Western University of Health Sciences (Class of 2010), Dr. Rodriguez completed his internship at VCA California Animal Hospital / West Los Angeles and carries forward the legacy of the hospital while focusing on modern, high-quality veterinary medicine.
Dr. Jonathan Friedberg – Also a 2010 graduate of Western University, Dr. Friedberg completed his internship at Animal Specialty Group (ASG) in Los Angeles and has been a cornerstone of the hospital for many years, known for his dedication to patient care and strong client relationships.
Dr. Mikel Gonzales – A Western University graduate, Dr. Gonzales joined the team full time in 2025 and brings a fresh perspective along with a commitment to compassionate, thorough care.
Dr. Lorena Sandoval – A 2020 graduate of Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Sandoval adds valuable experience and a patient-centered approach to the team.
